Two men remain in critical condition after falling 60m onto rocks in the middle of the night at Piha Beach, west of Auckland.

The men, 18 and 31, were airlifted out after others in the group raised the alarm with local surf lifesavers.

Three of the group are believed to have climbed three-quarters of the way up Pihas famous Lion Rock. The uninjured man was later questioned by police.

Police are appealing to the public for information regarding the movements of a white Nissan ute prior to the incident.
